HYDERABAD: Sunshine Hospitals on Tuesday launched a swine flu vaccine program for general public at an affordable price of Rs. 800 per dose.
Hospital authorities informed that the vaccine will be useful for pregnant women, diabetics, patients having chronic asthma, heart and lung diseases.
Good result
“One shot of this vaccine will be enough and there is no need for any booster dose. This vaccine is not for children below the age of 18 years. The vaccine has showed very good results in United Kingdom and elsewhere,” informed consultant pulmonologist, Sunshine Hospitals, Dr. Sudheer Alapati.
Marginal side effects
The potency of the swine flu vaccine will be for one-year and it has marginal side affects.
“I myself was inoculated with swine flu vaccine last year. Except for a slight pain in my arm, there were no side effects. This is the vaccine available in the twin cities and high risk patients should make use of it as a preventive step,” Dr. Sudheer said.
“General public are nervous about swine flu because of the deaths. Getting inoculated with the vaccine is the best way of prevention. There are no side effects and the vaccine is being offered at an affordable price,” said Managing Director and CEO of Sunshine Hospitals, Dr. A. V. Guruva Reddy.
The vaccine was formally launched by film director Rajamouli, music director Keeravani, producer Gangaraju and Rama Rajamouli. The first shot of the vaccine was administered to Mr. Rajamouli too.

Sunshine University Hospital a step closer
In the latest positive step towards the revised 2016 delivery date, an engineer services advisor has been appointed to the $1.97 billion project.
Queensland Health has engaged Umow Lai to provide a full range of engineering services, including mechanical, electrical, fire, communications, hydraulics, lifts, civil and structural services.
Last November, Conrad Gargett Architecture was announced as the master planner for the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
Consultancy firm Turner and Townsend will work alongside Conrad Gargett as lead technical advisers for the project.
A considerable amount of work had been undertaken before the release of the preliminary master plan last month.
This included original concept planning in 2006 through to project definition in 2008.
It is anticipated it will be updated in 2011, and again in 2012, to reflect the preferred public design.
The State Government intends to deliver the new hospital through a Public Private Partnership (PPP), requiring a financial investment by the private sector.
The Sunshine Coast University Hospital was delayed in 2009 because the global financial crisis had made it difficult for the private sector to secure funding to bid for a large-scale project.
The new hospital will be built on a 20-hectare greenfield site at Kawana.
The $1.97 billion hospital will open with 450 beds in 2016, increasing to 738 beds by 2021.
Co-located will be a private hospital, to be constructed by 2013.
Expressions of interest are out for the private hospital operator.
Queensland Health intends to purchase 70 beds from the operator in the first year and 110 the following year.
When completed, the two hospitals will have about 1000 beds.
Site capacity planning currently envisages a total of 1200 beds.
The project will also include an academic and research centre.
Umow Lai director Elizabeth Coe said her firm had extensive experience in the hospital sector.
“Current projects include the proposed new $1.7 billion Royal Adelaide Hospital,” Ms Coe said.
As part of their consulting services, Umow Lai’s team, including John Mullen & Partners, will also be developing the master planning design for the road infrastructure to be built for the new Kawana precinct.
The catchment population for the Sunshine Coast University Hospital is expected to increase by 8600 to 9000 annually.

Sunshine Hospital performs unique knee surgery
HYDERABAD: Sunshine Hospitals has announced that a team of doctors headed by Dr A.V. Guruva Reddy, MD of the hospital, and Dr. Mark A. Synder, a designer surgeon from the US, conducted an oxinium ceramic knee surgery for the first time in the State.
“Oxinium is the name of a brand. It is an alloy made of bio-compatible material. Oxidized zirconium is called oxinium. These are better than the cobalt chrome implants used until now and can be effective without any replacement for more than 30 years,” said Dr Reddy announcing the achievement to reporters.
The hospital, operational for the past six months, would be officially open on May 2, he said. Oxinium was approved by the FDA (Federal Drug Authority) ten years ago. It would suit patients sensitive to metal, especially nickel, said Dr Synder.
Unlike the current practice of using cobalt chrome on one side and plastic on the other usage of oxinium was of superior strength, with high wear resistance and endurance though it might cost Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 more. Cost of replacement surgery for a knee would be Rs 2,00,000 per knee with the cost being Rs 90,000 for the implant per knee, Dr Reddy said.
Stressing the need to remove misconceptions which persisted among people on the success of knee replacement surgeries, Dr Reddy said: “Unlike other surgeries, 98 per cent of the knee replacement surgeries have succeeded. The basic surgical technique is the same for both cobalt chrome and oxinium replacement surgeries.”
The surgery could bring more patients from the West as the same operation cost Rs 15 lakh there, Dr Reddy said. As insurance companies did not pay for the revision surgeries, unlike in the US, patients in India should go for oxinium as it guaranteed near lifetime usage, he added.
The ceramic surface makes oxinium implants 4,900 times more abrasion-resistant than cobalt chrome. It also reduces friction between the implant and the plastic or cartilage surfaces resulting in superior durability over time.
“With the increasing incidence of rheumatic arthritis in younger generation between 20 and 30, they can go for oxinium transplants factoring in the longer usage. Post-surgery patients can even sit on the floor and participate in sports like skiing, he said. Dr A.V. Guruva Reddy has over 20 years' experience in joint replacement surgeries and conducts on an average 1,000 surgeries per annum.
